Goa’s biggest music, dance and cultural festival – Goa Unplugged set to unfold

Goa’s biggest music, dance and cultural festival aptly titled GOA UNPLUGGED is all set to unfold – in a couple of months. The three-day extravaganza of music, dance, film, art, culture and multimedia is expected to be held at the Baga Beach in Goa from 2nd September to the 4th September.

Goa Unplugged will primarily be a music and dance festival, says DJ Jenny D, spokesperson for the event, but will also incorporate cultural events, local Goan music and dance performances, art shows and will screen local films on Goan history, culture and the Goan way of life. The event is expected to draw over 25,000 people with over 15000 visitors coming from the State of Goa itself and other 10,000 from the rest of India, say the organizers Living Talent Media. Goa Unplugged will include a strong ‘Don’t Do Drugs’ message at all its sub-events and performances. Over 2000 foreign tourists are expected to attend this event, given that DJs from Germany, the UK and the USA are expected to perform at Goa Unplugged.

Besides local Goan music, other forms like Hip-Hop, House, Techno, etc will be showcased by Disc Jockey’s or DJs from all over the world who have been invited for the event. While entry for the cultural events, cultural dance and music performances by local Goan bands and artistes is free, the entry fee for the three-day event for international DJ performances will be Rs 3000 per person.

“Goa Unplugged will offer a well-designed and produced, all-round entertainment experience, unique with a wide variety of music and performances, art, dance, film and even plays and theatre. Cutting-edge technology will combine with basic essentials in entertainment and music to produce a sophisticated, world-class audio-visual treat spread over three days,” explains DJ Jenny D who will be performing during all three days of the event.

The musical line-up for Goa Unplugged includes Electronica, House, Reggae, Folk, Progressive House, Ambient, Hip-Hop, Funk, Techno, a bit of Trance and will include even classical performances.

We have written to the State Government of Goa and the Ministry of Culture requesting that Goa Unplugged be classified as a Cultural Event which will enable us to reduce the entry fee burden particularly on local goan youth if the entertainment tax component is waived off by the state government, said a spokesperson for Living Talent Media. We expect the Government of Goa to consider our request favorably given the fact that almost 500 local artistes, musicians, actors, dancers etc from the State of Goa will participate in this event. The number of foreign performers is about 12-15. The focus is on local participation and we hope the government understands this. This is also a great tourism promotion activity for the State of Goa.

DJ JENNY D LIVE – MICHAEL JACKSON TRIBUTE IN MUMBAI

ORO LOUNGE, NEXT TO EVERSHINE MALL,

MALAD, 25TH JUNE, 2011

By Frank Franklyn – Futuristic Media Network

Mumbai-based, Goa-born, well-known disc jockey DJ Jenny D will present a special tribute to the late King of Pop, Michael Jackson on his second death anniversary – at select discotheques in Mumbai.

Says Dj Jenny D, “Michael Jackson was and still is an enigma to all music lovers all over the world. I grew up watching his videos and hearing his tracks and was shocked at his sudden death. It is a great privilege to be part of this presentation, and I am working real hard to give it my best.” The special program will include remixes and other fusion Jackson music, though Jenny D is not ready to disclose more. “Come, shake a leg and pay tribute to the King of Pop,” she says mischievously.

DJ Jenny D is a professional DJ who has performed at various prominent locations, discotheques, and events all over India and abroad.  Says, Jenny D, “Music entered my life much before I can recall, as I grew up listening to the family collection of mix tapes from electronic radio stations from around the world. When I finished high school I was certain I wanted to be DJ. I started spinning when I was quite young , starting off with small gigs like birthday parties and weddings in my locale. Professionally my first audience was the globetrotting socialite haute of cosmopolitan Bombay and before I knew it,  I was hired by various 3 and 5 star hotels in the maximum city for their exclusive events and club nights.

However, throughout my tenure I realized there was always a demand for fresh music and I had to go through a constant change of reinventing my style of music. It was cumbersome but at the same time I enjoyed the challenge in it. Now not only do I spin various genres fit for the city slickers audience, but also for the daylong (and sometimes nightlong!!) soirees.

My sets vary from Retro, minimal house, hip-hop to underground groovy beats including House, Electro, Bollywood and even Trance,” explains DJ Jenny D, talking about her music.

Her style includes Retro, Hip-Hop, House (funky, tribal, commercial), Electro, commercial Bollywood and Trance (dark, psychedelic, acid).

According to Wikipedia, Michael Joseph Jackson was an American recording artist, dancer, singer-song writer, musician, and philanthropist. Referred to as the King of Pop, Jackson is recognized as the most successful entertainer of all time by Guinness World Records. His contribution to music, dance, and fashion, along with a much-publicized personal life, made him a global figure in popular culture for over four decades. The seventh child of the Jackson family, he debuted on the professional music scene along with his brothers as a member of The Jackson 5, then the Jacksons in 1964, and began his solo career in 1971.

In the early 1980s, Jackson became a dominant figure in popular music. The music videos for his songs, including those of “Beat It”, “Billie Jean”, and “Thriller”, were credited with transforming the medium into an art form and a promotional tool, and the popularity of these videos helped to bring the relatively new television channel MTV to fame. Videos such as “Black or White” and “Scream” made him a staple on MTV in the 1990s. Through stage performances and music videos, Jackson popularized a number of dance techniques, such as the robot and the moonwalk, to which he gave the name. His distinctive musical sound and vocal style have influenced numerous hip hop, pop, contemporary R&B, and rock artists.

Jackson’s 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. His other records, including Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991), and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world’s best-selling. Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. He was also inducted into the Dance Hall of Fame as the first (and currently only) dancer from the world of pop and rock ‘n’ roll. Some of his other achievements include multiple Guinness World Records; 13 Grammy Awards (as well as the Grammy Legend Award and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award); 26 American Music Awards (more than any other artist, including the “Artist of the Century”); 13 number-one singles in the United States in his solo career (more than any other male artist in the Hot 100 era); and the estimated sale of over 750 million records worldwide. Jackson won hundreds of awards, which have made him the most-awarded recording artists in the history of music. He was also a notable humanitarian and philanthropist, donating and raising hundreds of millions of dollars for beneficial causes and supporting more than 39 charities.

While preparing for his concert series This Is It, Jackson died of acute propofol intoxication on June 25, 2009, after suffering from cardiac arrest. Jackson’s death triggered a global outpouring of grief, and as many as one billion people around the world reportedly watched his public memorial service on live television. In March 2010, Sony Music Entertainment signed a $250 million deal with Jackson’s estate to retain distribution rights to his recordings until 2017, and to release seven posthumous albums over the decade following his death.
